Cheap and Colorful Rug

I’m amazed at how a single purchase can make such a difference in a room, and it’s even better when you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg. I paid only $153 for this 8 x 11 foot rug from Overstock, and I couldn’t be more pleased with my purchase.  It’s the Safavieh Cottage in navy/cream.  In reality the cream is a lot closer to taupe.

There was nothing wrong with the sisal rug I had before.  I liked the texture it added as well as its neutral color.  When my walls were dark, it provided some contrast.

Once I went back to white paint, though, I realized I wanted something different. Something with some color and pattern.  Something that fit my budget.

I’m a big believer in the saying “you get what you pay for.” Sometimes, though, you just need a dose of realism.  I have three dogs who like to think they run the joint.

I have a two-year old grandson who is here a lot.  I don’t have a big budget.

The new rug is polypropylene, not wool.  It isn’t thick or cushy or by any means the best quality rug I’ve ever owned.  I think it’s going to do the job for now, though.  If I realize down the road that it isn’t holding up like it should, at least I’m not out a lot of money and won’t be sick to my stomach if I have to replace it.

Truth be told, I actually prefer bare floors in my house so most rooms have no rugs at all.  It’s just a cleaner look and one less thing to deal with.

In my living room, however, I like having a rug and I really love this new one. I probably spent a whole fifteen minutes picking it out online, it arrived in four days, the price was great, and it’s decent quality for the money. That’s a win in my book.

  1. Looks great! I like the color and the pattern. Studying rugs online has been on my to do list a lot lately. We’d like to have a new rug for our family room too. It’s so hard to know what color the rug will be in person though.

    1. Thanks! I agree that buying a rug online is risky. I’ve had good luck almost every time, though. This one turned out not to really be cream in person, but that is actually a good thing given that I have dogs.

  2. I can so relate Jill! I spent money buying expensive plush rugs that my two cats love to use as scratching pads! I recently decided to change the colors in my bedroom to different shades of blue, and found a 9×12 navy, ivory, and turquoise rug for $99 and free shipping on Wayfair. It was delivered yesterday and is beautiful! Your rug is gorgeous also!

    1. You got a great deal, Marsha! If you have pets, you really do have to consider whether it’s worth it to spend more when you know they are going to do what they do.

  3. I’m with you! My dogs rule the roost, also, so there’s no way I can pay a lot for a rug. I just got a new one for my dining room (and wrote a post on it, of course!) and it was about $200 for 8 x 11. It’s wool, and great quality, but like you, I won’t be heartbroken when it needs to be replaced some day because I didn’t pay an arm and a leg for it!

    1. Exactly! It doesn’t make sense to pay a lot when you know accidents are going to happen. I wish mine was wool. I did buy one for my son’s nursery that is excellent quality and was just under $200 for a 5 x 8. There are good deals out there.

  4. Safavieh makes the best rugs!!! I buy them from Home…they often have sales, and I have yet to get a bad one!!
Your room is lovely and the rug makes all the difference!
I’ll take the doggies…especially the black one who looks at you with those B I G soulful eyes!! Too cute!!
